Residential Renovation & Addition at 37 Renaissance Court, Vaughan

Located at 37 Renaissance Court in Vaughan, this project involved the comprehensive architectural and structural design for the renovation and addition of a two-storey detached house of more than 5,000 square feet. The project was designed to adapt the existing home to the client’s evolving lifestyle and functional needs while improving the layout, expanding the second floor, and upgrading the basement with new walkout access and interior alterations.

On the main floor, the primary objective was to transform the existing compartmentalized layout into a modern open-concept living space. Selected interior walls were removed and the structural system was redesigned to create a more seamless connection between the living, dining, and kitchen areas. The new arrangement improves circulation, encourages greater interaction between the principal living spaces, and allows natural light to penetrate more effectively throughout the main floor.

The basement renovation focused on improving accessibility, natural light, and the overall functionality of the lower level. New exterior access and walkout features were incorporated on the east and west sides of the house, together with interior alterations to create a brighter and more versatile basement environment. The architectural and structural design required careful coordination of the new openings, stairs, foundation modifications, and existing building structure.

On the second floor, existing open-to-below areas and voids were strategically infilled to create larger and more functional bedrooms. The additional floor area improved the efficiency of the upper-level layout while providing greater comfort and flexibility for the occupants. A new bedroom was also created through an addition extending over the existing garage, increasing the usable floor area of the house without significantly expanding the building footprint.

The structural engineering design addressed the modifications required to support the open-concept main floor, second-floor expansion, new bedroom addition, and basement walkout. New and modified structural elements were carefully integrated with the existing house to provide appropriate load transfer while accommodating the proposed architectural layout.

The renovation and addition at 37 Renaissance Court demonstrates how architectural design and structural engineering can transform an existing Vaughan home into a more spacious, functional, and contemporary residence. By combining an open-concept main floor renovation, basement walkout improvements, second-floor expansion, and an addition over the garage, the project provides a comprehensive solution that enhances the functionality, comfort, and long-term value of the property.
